Summary
Surveyor's Edge is a surveying and field-data app. Based on the current repo:
- The app does not include ads.
- The app does not include account creation, user login, reviewer login, or cloud sync.
- The app does not include analytics, crash reporting SDKs, or in-app advertising SDKs in this repo.
- Most project data stays on the device unless you explicitly use a networked feature or choose to export or share files.
Important release-build note: this repo contains internal beta-survey and tier-testing code, but release builds now disable that path by default unless SE_ENABLE_INTERNAL_UPGRADE_TESTING is intentionally enabled. This policy is written for the default release build with that internal testing path disabled.
Information the app stores locally on your device
Surveyor's Edge stores project and app data locally in app-managed storage. Based on the repo, this can include:
- project files and project snapshots
- point logs
- photo logs
- track logs
- stored photo files, including raw and stamped copies
- alignments and localizations
- imported background files and MBTiles
- offline tile downloads and map cache files
- imported projection definitions
- photo logo assets
- app settings and certain local preferences
On Android, the app prefers the app-specific external files area when available and falls back to the app documents area when needed. On iPhone and iPad, the app uses app-managed local storage provided by iOS.
This local data stays on your device until you delete it in the app, remove it manually from device storage, or uninstall the app.
Permissions and why the app uses them
Location
Surveyor's Edge uses device location for field-survey features such as:
- showing your live position on the map
- collecting GPS points
- geotagging stored photos
- computing projected coordinates
- alignment referencing and related map workflows
The app also requests background location access for one purpose only:
- user-started background track logging
When you start track logging, the app can continue collecting location while the app is not in use so the active track keeps recording. On Android, the app starts a foreground service and shows an ongoing notification while background track logging is active. When you pause or end track logging, that background workflow stops.
Camera and photos
If you choose to capture a photo, the app uses the camera to create project photos.
If you choose to import a photo, the app reads the selected photo from your device so it can be used in the current project workflow.
When you store, export, or share stamped photos, Surveyor's Edge can write:
- visible survey stamp text onto the image
- GPS EXIF metadata such as latitude, longitude, altitude, and heading when that information is available
The app also saves stamped photo copies through the platform photo-save flow so they are available outside the app.
Microphone and speech recognition
Speech dictation is optional. It starts only when you press a microphone button in the app.
The repo uses the operating system speech-recognition service for dictation. The repo does not send microphone audio to a Surveyor's Edge server.
Files and device storage
If you import files, Surveyor's Edge may copy those files into app-managed storage or temporary staging folders so the app can continue using them later.
If you export or share files, Surveyor's Edge creates output files and hands them to the platform save flow or another app only when you choose those actions.
When the app connects to the internet
Surveyor's Edge can make direct network requests to third-party services when you use online features. Based on the repo, these include:
Online basemaps and map tiles
When you use online basemaps, the app requests map tiles directly from the selected provider. Built-in providers in this repo include services such as:
- USGS
- Esri
- OpenStreetMap
- OpenTopoMap
- OpenRailwayMap
- OpenHikingMap
- NASA GIBS
- NOAA
- FAA
- CARTO
- Bing
- Google live-view layers
- RealEarth
The app also lets users add custom XYZ and WMTS sources, which can send requests to the provider the user configures.
Offline downloads are user-started only. The repo marks Google layers as live-view only and excludes them from offline-download support.
Address lookup
If you use Point From Address, the app sends the address fields you enter to OpenStreetMap Nominatim to return an approximate coordinate match.
The app stores only the result you choose to save into a project.
Projection lookup
If you choose an EPSG-based projection import or repair workflow, the app can download WKT or PROJ4 definitions from epsg.io.
Sharing and exports
Surveyor's Edge includes local export and share workflows for project data. For example, the repo supports sharing or exporting combinations of:
- points
- photos
- tracks
- alignments
- localizations
- level exports
- project packages
- projection sidecar files
These workflows are user-initiated. The app prepares the selected files and then uses platform save or share flows to place those files outside the app or hand them to another app.
Examples verified in the repo include:
- Android photo export to
Pictures/Surveyor's Edge - platform share sheets for selected files
- platform document pickers and save flows for import/export actions
If you save or share files outside the app, those copies are governed by the destination you choose and remain there until you delete them.
What the app does not do in the default release build
Based on the current repo and the release-build changes made for this publication pass, Surveyor's Edge does not do the following in its default release configuration:
- create a Surveyor's Edge account for you
- require login to use the app
- show ads
- send project, photo, point, or track data to a Surveyor's Edge backend for analytics or cloud sync
- require a reviewer login
Data retention and deletion
Because most data is stored locally on your device, you generally control retention by deleting the data from within the app or removing the app from your device.
Based on the repo, the app includes local deletion workflows for items such as:
- projects
- points
- photos
- tracks
- offline tile data
- caches
If you need server-side deletion language in the future, update this policy only after that server-side behavior actually exists and is verified.
Third-party services
This repo makes direct requests to third-party services when you use certain features. Those providers may process requests under their own terms and privacy policies. Examples verified in this repo include:
- OpenStreetMap Nominatim for address lookup
- epsg.io for projection-definition lookup
- map and tile providers selected from the built-in or user-configured basemap list
Surveyor's Edge does not proxy those requests through a Surveyor's Edge server in the default release build covered by this policy.
Children
Surveyor's Edge is not directed to children under 13.
Surveyor's Edge is intended for adults and other users engaged in surveying, mapping, field work, and outdoor use. We do not market the app to children as a child-directed app.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when app behavior changes. If you add new data collection, server storage, analytics, accounts, or advertising, update this policy before shipping that behavior.
